What Are Some Injectable Neurotoxins?

Botulinum toxin Type A is an injectable neurotoxin that is more commonly known under popular brand names such as Botox Cosmetic, Dysport, Jueveau, and Xeomin. At Advanced Wellness Aesthetics, we offer Botox, Dysport, as well as Jueveau.  Neurotoxin treatments are most often used to reduce the appearance of and smooth wrinkles and fine lines that are caused by facial expressions such as smiling, frowning, squinting, etc.

These treatments work by blocking nerve impulses to the muscles, which causes them to relax and temporarily paralyzes the muscles for cosmetic effect. They are injected into the muscles underlying the affected areas, where this lack of muscle contraction prevents the face from forming lines and wrinkles. The botulinum toxin is the same toxin that causes botulism. When used correctly and in very small doses, doctors are able to use botox to reduce wrinkles by interfering with the nerve signaling processes that cause muscle contraction.

  • Am I a good candidate for dermaplaning?
It is important to seek advice from your doctor about whether or not dermaplaning is right for you. It is a great choice for those who want to improve the texture and tone of their skin as well remove unwanted facial hair. This procedure can be used on various types of skins even if you have sensitive skin, rosacea, or visible facial vein. Dermaplaning is often used by patients who are pregnant or nursing, who are not advised to use most peeling agents on their skin. This treatment should not be used on patients with active acne or keloid scarring.
  • What should I expect during the treatment?
Before the treatment begins, your skin will be cleansed of makeup and oils. Once your skin has been cleaned, a medical-grade sterile blade will be used to gently scrape off the outer layer of skin to remove dead skin and fine hair. The length of the treatment is estimated to take about forty-five minutes to complete. The treatment is basically painless and requires no downtime.
  • How long is the recovery period of the treatment?
Following your dermaplaning procedure, your skin may be slightly pink between the next few minutes or hours. You are able to resume to your daily activities immediately. You should avoid prolonged sun exposure since your new skin layer is vulnerable to ultraviolet radiation.

Dermaplaning is a low-risk procedure with few side effects. Some people experience redness in their face hours after getting the treatment and whiteheads on skin for days or weeks afterward. Although rare, infection and scarring do occur. Lastly, a patchy skin pigment may appear in the treated area that will decrease with time.
